What Happens if I Fail the ASCP Certification?

Failure is something you never plan on or hope for. More than likely you will have studied and tried your best to pass the exam. I know for myself I spent nearly one year preparing for the ASCP certification for Medical Laboratory Scientist and know firsthand how difficult it was to pass. I had heard from many people that did not pass the certification and were too scared to take it again. The most important thing is to remember if you fail it does not mean you should give up. I have listed some tips in this article that may be of help to you in your journey through the ASCP certification process.

The first thing to remember is to not be disappointed in yourself. It is a very hard test and a large ASCP Certificationpercentage of people do not pass the test in there first attempt. The first thing you should do is to take a few weeks off from studying. This will give your mind a fresh start when you go back and start studying again. The ASCP allows you to retake the exam up to five times per route, but you must wait three months after you fail the exam to attempt it again. Do not reapply to take the certification right after you fail, wait for the ASCP to contact you.

The next thing you should do is to ask yourself the question if you want to retake the exam. That is a hard question to answer. It takes a lot of energy to put forth the effort to study and take the certification again. If the answer to the question is yes then the first step is to formulate a better plan then the one that you have already tried.

The plan should improve the areas you were weak in. Ask yourself what went wrong with the first attempt and what went right. Fortunately, the ASCP will send you a breakdown of what topics you struggled with on your initial exam which will point you in the right direction for the best study topics going forward. Every successful person studying for an exam has a quiet room to study, is organized and has the study skills to be able to pass an exam.

A quiet place to study is invaluable. Noise, kids and other people can distract you from focusing on what you are trying to learn. It can be any room that you have access to, but preferably one that you can go to any time you have a moment to devote to studying. Being disorganized can distract you and ultimately lead to poor recall during your exam time. If you don’t have clear notes or are not studying the right material you can fail the test. I wrote notes down in my notebook and used a study guide to keep myself organized. Lastly, I used flash cards, mnemonic devices and quizzed myself daily to make sure I was learning the material.

The exam is hard and not everyone can pass it. Working towards a goal takes effort, time and a desire to want to succeed. If you fail, it is not the end of the world and you simply need to approach the exam differently the next time around. I have given you a few tips on how to be successful when it comes to studying and passing the exam.
